Baby Joyce, A surrogate birth

When Amanda called me and told me she was a gestational surrogate, wanting to hire me as a gift for the intended mother, of course I said yes!

Xin knew she wanted to be a mother, and so as soon as the laws in China were changed, she came to the United States to utilize IVF and surrogacy.

Up until recently in China, it wasn’t allowed for parents to have more than 1 child, nor for single women to become parents. Surrogacy and IVF are also illegal there. Xin knew she wanted to be a mother, and so as soon as the laws in China were changed, she came to the United States to utilize IVF and surrogacy. After several rounds of IVF, and also attempting pregnancy with a different surrogacy, one of her last fertilized eggs had resulted in pregnancy! Xin knew nothing of pregnancy, childbirth, or ever even held a baby before, but knew she wanted to be a mother.

Amanda labored so quietly, you hardly knew she was having contractions at all. She had had previous natural and fast labors, so the staff was hurrying to give her a dose of antibiotics before the baby was born. When Amanda finally started to cry out from the pain, the staff came in. Before the bed was fully set up, and the doctor could get his gown or gloves on, out came baby! Xin named her Joy in Chinese, Joyce in English. Everyone watched anxiously as Joyce was examined, then after everyone had a chance to hold her, off to the nursery we went, so Xin could learn how to take care of her new baby girl. The last thing I heard as I was leaving, was Xin asking the staff to make sure to give her a room next to Amanda, so that Amanda would be able to see baby Joyce whenever she wanted. <3
